Artifact: Analysis of Online Class Offerings

Reflection

The artifact presented is a memo to the Superintendent evaluating the course offerings of 3 institutions as a substitute for Algebra 2.  Resources for evaluation are identified and discussed in the memo followed by an assessment of classes at each school.  A recommendation is provided based on the identified resources; UC Doorways A-G list and the CLRN.

This artifact demonstrates my understanding of considerations for using online classes and specifically and understand of the UC Doorways A-G list.

Through this exercise I have become aware of the UC Doorways A-G list and more aware of the amazing variety of online classes being offered to students.  This is a very current topic because we have many charter schools in our county and continue to receive requests for more charters to be accepted.  Many of those charter schools rely on online classes to provide all the classes students need.  In our county we have seen the damage created when am charter schools shuts down in the middle of a student’s educational experience. It would also be tragic if a student completed coursework that would not be accepted by the college of the student’s choice.  This fictitious example of a football team taking a mathematics course online is actually very close to a real situation.  A colleague of mine works at the College of San Mateo as a computer laboratory Instructional Aide.  Every summer they have 45 football players in the lab every day trying to complete online classes such as mathematics so they can obtain eligibility and play football.  It is very important we safeguard our student’s future by understanding how to assess online classes for compliance to UC standards.

Completing this exercise has strengthened my understanding of consequences and potential pitfalls online classes.  It has prepared me to work as a CTO on a team with other members of a cabinet to help assure student success.
